The Wildcats are proud to announce their second addition to the 2016-2017 recruiting class, center, Chris Westlund. Westlund has chosen to forgo his final year of junior hockey eligibility to join the Wildcats.

Chris Westlund comes from Calgary, Alberta and is a big 6’3” 200 lb. power-forward with elite intangibles. He thrives in the face-off circle, battling in the corners, has a quick release, and surprising speed for a player of his size .

Westlund played the last two seasons for the Selkirk Steelers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League after playing two seasons at the prestigious Edge Hockey School in Calgary.

“A few weeks ago, I was able to go Tucson,” said Chris Westlund.  “The University itself, the engineering programs, and the school spirit is all beyond impressive.  This was an easy decision after meeting Coach Chad and what he is building.  The hockey program is excellent and Coach Chad’s ideas and vision are what any hockey player going to school would want.”

Westlund has an excellent track record of character and community involvement, something highly valued as a member of the UA Hockey program.

While attending the Edge School in Calgary, Westlund was awarded the Principle Award for excellence, character, academics, and athletics. After High School, Westlund continued with is community contributions in Selkirk where he was awarded with the Presidents Award for excellence, character, and community involvement.

"Chris checks off everything that we look for in our hockey program at the University of Arizona,” said Coach Berman. “ “First and foremost, he is a great kid and its easy to see why when you meet his parents.  We are building a team with the best combination of character and talent; I don't believe you can win championships without both, making Chris a perfect fit. Meanwhile, his community involvement is just as impressive as his on ice talent. Chris executes the intangibles of the game at an elite level, making him effective in all three zones. I believe the combination of his size and speed will allow him to develop into an elite power-forward in the ACHA. I couldn't be any more excited for our hockey program, Engineering Department, and Tucson community."
