Cats Celebrate Conference Championship After Beating Rival Arizona State
February 28, 2020

Tucson Ariz.- University of Arizona Wildcat Hockey defeated Arizona State 3-2 on Friday night to improve their record to 24-4-3. Arizona celebrated the Western Collegiate Hockey League (WCHL) Championship they earned earlier this month, after tonight’s victory. Greg Malafronte scored late in the 2nd period to seal the game for the Cats. Wildcats goaltender, Anthony Ciurro stopped 32 of a possible 34 shots to earn the victory. Ciurro improves his record to 16-2-2.

When asked about his first goal in the Tucson Arena, Greg Malafronte, said “It was a tight game, and Westlund found me in the slot. I was able to bury it, to hear the crowd roar like that it was amazing.”

The Wildcats will be back in action on tomorrow to wrap up the regular season against the same Arizona State Sun Devils. The Cactus cup will be on the line with both teams having the opportunity to claim it with a victory. Tomorrow night the Cats will also celebrate the graduating seniors and pay tribute to all the hard work they have brought to the Arizona locker room. Saturday’s game is free for all University of Arizona students when they present their Cat Card at the ticket window.

Following the Saturday night game, the Cats will have a couple of weeks off before heading to Frisco, Texas to compete in the ACHA Division 1 National Tournament. With the Cats winning the WCHL conference they have received an auto-bid to the tournament and are currently ranked 8th in the nation.
