The Wildcats continue with their recent run of defensemen with the addition of impact defensemen, John Shively! This is the fourth defensemen added to the Wildcats 2020/21 recruiting class in the last week.

Shively, standing at 5’11” 175-pounds, comes from West Dundee, Illinois. He spent last season playing in the SUNYAC for Buffalo State University (NCAA DIII).

Before Buffalo State he had spent his junior hockey career in the NAHL with the Topeka Pilots and Bismarck Bobcats and in the WHL with the Ogden Mustangs. Just before his time with Ogden he also played for the St Louis Jr. Blues (NA3HL) team that lost in overtime of the National Championship game with current Wildcats: Matthew Hohl, Ben Jones and Dawson Marshall.

“I chose the University of Arizona because of the atmosphere and culture the program brings to the table,” said John Shively. ”I believe that a winning culture and exciting atmosphere sets me up for success later down the road. I know plenty of guys on the team who I have played with - and against. Those guys gave me great insight into both the hockey program and the University and they had nothing but great things to say. Additionally, I am excited to get a great education with one of the top business school in the country (Ellar College of Management) along with unbelievable weather”

Shively brings a veteran presence adding to a nice blend of high upside prospects and a strong returning core. He plays the game at a quick pace, further adding to the Wildcats transition game.

“Adding Shively is a huge addition and a really important ‘glue-piece’ to our already impressive defensive group,” said Coach Berman. “He can be used in any situation. I love his puck movement and mobility – which is a staple of what we look for on the back end. Players like this immediately make our forwards better because of their quick transition game. In addition to his skill set he plays with grit and physicality, which is critical come playoff time.”
