The Wildcats have added another piece to their 2020/21 recruiting class, this time with local ties, adding power-forward, Matt Marquis.

Marquis, standing 6’1” 185-pounds was born in Scottsdale, AZ and currently resides in Pittsburgh, PA. He spent last season playing for the Phoenix Jr Coyotes tallying 10 points in 21 games played. Marquis had several junior A options in the NAHL, BCHL, and NCDC but decided he was ready to start his education and career path towards becoming a chiropractor.

“I am extremely excited to sign with the University of Arizona for the next 4 years,” said Matt Marquis. “The University and hockey program provide everything I was looking for on and off the ice.  In addition, playing in front of the U of A fan base is going to be something special. I am excited to study in the college of medicine and make a push for a National Championship at the same time. Playing for a top team in the nation is something I am looking forward to and I cannot wait to get to work under coach Berman and the rest of the Wildcat staff.”

The Jr. Coyotes are coached by Dave Ellet, who spent 16 seasons in the NHL, including 2 NHL All-Star appearances. His highly decorated NHL career included stops with the Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs (alternate Captain), New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues. Wildcat fans may remember Dave Ellet from playing against the Wildcats as a member of the NHL Alumni team. 

Marquis comes with a big body and versatility, playing both center and wing. But it was his maturity and determination that attracted coach Berman the most.

“When you talk to Matt you really get the sense he knows exactly what he wants out of life,” said coach Berman. “It’s very matter of fact. In my experience, when you take a person who has a very clear image of what they want to become and combine that with a strong work ethic there will be a positive outcome every time.”

“As he continues to get stronger it will only enhance the strengths of his game. He skates well for a bigger guy and uses his size and determination effectively on the forecheck. But I love the little things in his game. He has really good special awareness off the puck , which can be difficult to teach. As we start putting all these little things together I think we will see a kid that develops fairly quickly - I’m looking forward to it.”
