TUCSON, AZ – University of Arizona Wildcat hockey swept #24 Arizona State in two games this past weekend at the Tucson Arena, winning the Cactus Cup trophy that signifies supremacy in Arizona college hockey for each season. Arizona is 4-0 vs ASU so far this season, extending their unbeaten streak from last season against the Sun Devils to six games.

The two wins catapulted the #15 Wildcats into first place of the Western Collegiate Hockey League at the conclusion of the team’s first semester of play, with a 16-6 mark.

“I am incredibly proud of these young men,” said UA head coach Chad Berman. “We have so many young newcomers who have bought-in to our winning attitude, and our seniors are showing true leadership that only experience can bring. They have earned this moment of victory, and I think this will help us gain momentum as we work to get back to the national tournament.”

The top 20 American Collegiate Hockey Association teams qualify for the national tournament, held this year in Columbus, Ohio from March 8-13.

This past weekend also marked the jersey retirement ceremony for 1989-93 Arizona forward Kelly Walker, who continues to hold multiple Arizona and national collegiate scoring records. Walker’s jersey retirement ceremony Saturday night capped a magical UA Hockey Alumni reunion weekend.

Walker’s Arizona hockey career video highlight reel is at the team’s YouTube site:
