The World University Games occur every two years, in both winter and summer, and are second in international importance only to the Olympics.

Cusanelli is the first University of Arizona Hockey player ever selected to Team USA, which for these games is made up of NCAA college players and players from the American Collegiate Hockey Association, the governing body that includes the Arizona Wildcats.

“It is an ultimate compliment to any hockey player to earn the opportunity to represent the United States for Team USA,” said Wildcats Head Coach Chad Berman. “Anthony’s hockey skills are obvious, but it is the kind of person that he is that will also shine on the world stage. He will represent the University of Arizona in the best way possible. To say we are proud of him is not enough. Words cannot describe how excited we are at Arizona Hockey.”

Cusanelli earned the 2018-2019 ACHA Rookie of the Year award, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Year award, a WCHL All-Star berth, the Arizona Rookie Award, and Wildcats MVP award. This season he is second in team scoring and is the team Captain.

“The thought of wearing our nation’s jersey is almost overwhelming,” said Cusanelli, known as much for his quiet, mature demeanor as his skating prowess. “I will do everything in my power to make Tucson and the University of Arizona proud. I am thankful for this incredible opportunity.”

Cusanelli will miss the final three regular season games for the Wildcats, but will return in time for Arizona’s expected run at the 2019 ACHA National Tournament, March 21-26, in Dallas. Arizona is currently ranked #6 nationally, boasts a 26-6 record, and owns first place in the WCHL standings.

Arizona’s next home games are Friday, February 22 (7:30 pm start) and Sunday, February 24 (4pm start) vs rival Arizona State.
