FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona Wildcat Hockey swept archrival Arizona State at the Tucson Arena with a 4-1 victory Sunday night at the Tucson Arena. It was the final home UA game of the 2018-19 season. The Wildcats defeated the same ASU squad 4-0 Friday night to secure the Cactus Cup, given to the winner of the eight game season-series between the intrastate rivals.
#8 Arizona is a perfect 6-0 so far this season vs ASU and improves to 29-7, while ASU drops to 7-27-3.
“We didn’t play our best game this weekend, but still managed to win The Cactus Cup on Friday and get another win tonight,” Head Coach Chad Berman said. “Playing ASU is always a huge challenge, and next week will be a bigger battle. We have to get better.”
#8 Arizona travels to Tempe next Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3 to finish the regular season at Arizona State. A victory in either game will clinch the first-ever Western Collegiate Hockey League championship for the Wildcats. Both games start at 1 pm at the Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe.
The league trophy will be presented to the Wildcats if they win the championship.
MEDIA NOTE: The Arizona Hockey Media team will travel to Tempe next weekend to broadcast both games via the official Arizona team YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/c/uahockey
Game broadcasts will start at 12:45 pm both days. These will be the first-ever road broadcasts for Arizona Wildcat hockey. Media Director Timothy Gassen and UA student Jackson Peters will be on the call.
The Wildcats will then wait for their expected berth and seeding in the 2019 American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament, played March 21-March 26 in Frisco (Dallas), Texas.
